The pound US dollar exchange rate held steady at around $1.233 today as Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit plan met with criticism, with EU officials describing the proposal as not “even remotely” acceptable. Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s Taoiseach, was also critical of the Irish backstop ‘compromise’, saying: “I don’t fully understand how we can have Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in a separate customs unions and somehow avoid there being tariffs and checks and customs posts between north and south.”
